Dental implants permanently replace missing teeth and they look and feel completely natural when your treatment is finished. If you have an upcoming dental implant appointment, or you’ve recently had an implant placed by Dr. Salesky at Southington Dentistry, we want to make sure you know the best ways to take care of yourself after surgery.
Here are our top recovery tips for dental implant patients:
1. Control Bleeding, Pain, And Swelling
Bleeding is quite normal during the first 24 hours after your procedure. If you are bleeding excessively, we recommend biting down on a gauze pad for 30 minutes to make sure the blood clots properly.
Swelling and bruising may also be present, particularly if you required a bone graft. Swelling peaks at 3-4 days post surgery, and can be treated with an ice pack.
Pain should be controlled with the medicine Dr. Salesky prescribes. You’ll typically take a prescription painkiller for the first several days post-op, then switch to an over-the-counter NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) like ibuprofen (Tylenol).
2. Take Antibiotics As Prescribed
If you have been given antibiotics, you must take them regularly, as prescribed by Dr. Salesky. Failing to do so could increase your risk of complications and infections.
3. Be Prepared For Dietary Changes
You’ll want to avoid chewing near your dental implant for at least 3-5 days. Primarily, your diet should consist of soft foods and liquids, like applesauce and soups, or smoothies. Also, you should not smoke or consume alcohol during your recovery process.
4. Keep Your Implant Clean
You should continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Be gentle near the site of the implant. In addition, supplement brushing with a saltwater rinse 4-5 times a day, or after every meal or snack, to keep food from becoming lodged near the implant.
5. Take Things Easy
Minimize physical activity on the day of your surgery, and limit yourself to walking for the next 3-4 days post-operation, as excessive physical activity may cause discomfort, throbbing, and bleeding.
6. Be Patient – Most Symptoms Subside Within 10 Days
Most of your side effects will disappear within a week to 10 days. If you are still experiencing serious pain, bleeding, or other such side effects after a week, you may want to contact Dr. Salesky for a follow-up appointment.
7. Above All Else, Follow Dr. Salesky’s Directions
If you want the fastest, safest recovery possible after oral surgery, it’s imperative that you follow post-op instructions given to you by Dr. Salesky. These instructions will ensure that your implant heals properly and that you are safe while you heal.
