The 4 Biggest Benefits of Cone Beam Imaging

At Southington Dentistry, Dr. Neil Salesky is dedicated to providing quality service to our patients by using cutting-edge technology. At our practice, we use a variety of different advanced tools from digital x-rays to laser dentistry and cone beam imaging.

Cone beam imaging uses an advanced, 3-dimensional x-ray scanner to capture accurate and reliable images of your mouth, jaw and facial structure. We invest in technology to ensure that your diagnosis and treatment are the most accurate they can be, and we pride ourselves on precision and excellent care. As a patient at Southington Dentistry, these are the benefits you’ll receive from our cone beam imaging technology.

1. Lower Doses of Radiation

Cone beam imaging is an alternative to traditional CT scans. While CT scans are safe and effective, they expose patients to a relatively high dose of radiation. A typical CT scan exposes patients to about 400-1000 µSv (microsieverts).

In contrast, cone beam imaging uses a focused x-ray that only scans the head. This provides comparable results to a CT scanner while exposing patients to a much lower radiation dose. The typical CBCT scan only exposes a patient to about 50-200 µSv, which is a reduction of nearly 75%.

2. Can Be Customized to Scan Different Parts of the Face

A CT scan cannot usually be used to scan a smaller part of the face or head. This means that, even if a dentist wants to focus particular area of the face, they must still scan the entire head.

CBCT imaging can be used for comprehensive scans as well as individual parts of the facial anatomy. This lets Dr. Salesky get better insights into your oral health without requiring multiple CT scans.

3. Faster Scan Times

CT Scans can easily take 15-30 minutes. This leads to long patient wait times and slower overall service. CBCT scans usually take 10-70 seconds, depending on the particulars of the scan. This means that you spend less time both in the scanner and in the waiting room.

In addition, CBCT scanners do not require patients to lay down in a full-length CT scanner, which can often be troublesome for patients who lack mobility or who are claustrophobic.

4. Better Image Quality

Cone beam imaging can capture images of your bone, soft tissue, and teeth all at once, unlike traditional x-rays. These images are of a higher quality than even the highest-quality multi-slice CT scanners.

With a wide variety of filtering and correction algorithms, Dr. Salesky can easily mitigate an interference or other problems that may be present in the final scan. This all adds up to a better diagnostic image and better results!
