Why Have A Tooth Pulled?

As your dentist it may seem counterintuitive to pull an adult tooth–after all, you are only given one set of adult teeth to last your lifetime! However, tooth extraction may be necessary to protect your smile from one or more of the following dental health conditions:

  • Crowded smile, where the jaw is too small to support the teeth
  • Wisdom teeth that put stress on and displace neighboring teeth
  • Remove a decayed tooth, damaged tooth or broken tooth that can’t be saved
  • Remove a loose tooth affected by periodontitis, age or a dental trauma
  • Reduce risks for gum disease or infection

If you have experienced a damaged tooth or tooth decay, Dr. Salesky and his team may recommend restorative dentistry with a dental crown or filling. But when more serious cases of dental trauma, tooth decay or disease are present tooth extraction may be the only way to safely remove a problematic tooth and encourage better oral health.

Does Tooth Extraction Hurt?

The tooth removal process is generally painless thanks to the use of a local anesthetic and post-treatment medication. Many patients report only experiencing a small sensation of pressure while the tooth is removed. If you have dental anxiety about having a tooth pulled, rest assured that Dr. Salesky will carefully guide you through what to expect during tooth extraction.

At your appointment we work together with you to ensure a comfortable treatment process and promote fast recovery. A local anesthetic is used to effectively numb the area before any treatment begins. For patients who need a little more help feeling relaxed at the dentist, sedation dentistry may also be administered. Using small dental forceps, Dr. Salesky will grasp the problem tooth and rock it gently back and forth to loosen and remove it carefully. In some cases such as if the tooth is impacted, resting under the gum line, it may be removed in pieces.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth, also known as your third molars, begin to develop in the back of your mouth during adolescence and can become a nagging growing pain. While not everyone needs a wisdom tooth extracted, they are often the culprits behind crowded smiles, TMJ pain or jaw pain over time. For some patients who have had previous orthodontic care such as Invisalign or metal braces, untreated wisdom teeth can place stress on the surrounding teeth and undo years of teeth straightening and orthodontic progress. Using dental X-rays at your regular six month check ups, Dr. Salesky can monitor the progress of your wisdom teeth and prepare accordingly if tooth extraction is needed.

What To Expect After Tooth Extraction

After a tooth is pulled, patients may leave the office with a prescription for pain relieving medication and post-treatment instructions. Patients are strongly encouraged to avoid smoking, consuming alcohol and should avoid drinking through a straw or engaging in rigorous activities. To clean your teeth, brush and floss gently around the area and rinse gently with warm water. If you experience any changes in your dental health or have dental related questions, contact our office for assistance from our team.

How Long Does It Take To Heal After Tooth Extraction?

How long it takes to heal after a tooth is pulled is dependent on each patient’s individual dental needs and health. Typically, healing takes place rapidly over the next 2-3 days following treatment. Many patients report feeling that sensations of soreness dissipate in about a week. If you are considering restorative dentistry with a dental implant or a dental bridge and crown, you may have to wait a period longer for full recovery of the mouth and gums.
