No Insurance? No problem!

If you don’t have dental insurance, you’re not alone. The American Dental Association notes that almost 40% of all adult Americans do not have dental insurance or aid. When you’re retired, self-employed, or working part-time, dental insurance may be the furthest thing from your mind, but as you age, dental coverage becomes more important.

But dental insurance isn’t the only way to get the care you need. At Southington Dentistry, we want all our patients to receive affordable dental care, no matter their financial situation. If you’re looking for a solution outside of dental insurance, check out our dental treatment plan.

Working Together to Create a Solution

We are proud to offer a membership plan as part of our commitment to helping Plantsville families get dental care within their budgets. By partnering with us, you’ll save on all dental treatments. There are no third-party fees, unnecessary paperwork or unmanageable payment stipulations. With the affordable dental plan at Southington Dentistry, you can remove the anxiety of worrying about your family’s dental care and work with our team to find a plan that suits your needs.

Our Membership Plan

To accommodate patients from all walks of life, we offer four levels of membership. Each plan is paid out over the course of 12 months and can be structured as a recurring payment on any debit or credit card. With careful planning, you can save between 15-25% on all our standard dental treatments.

  • Basic Preventative Plan: At this level, you’ll receive access to two standard dental appointments which include preventative treatments like a professional teeth cleaning, oral exams, x-rays, fluoride treatment and other restorative benefits. If you have good oral hygiene habits and healthy teeth, this is our suggested plan.
  • Kids Preventative Plan: This includes the same benefits as a basic plan, but at a discount for children. Good oral habits start from an early age and having access to a dentist is important. Looking after your children now makes it less likely that they’ll have complications later!
Periodontal Plan: This is a more proactive plan to help patients that need consistent dental care because of periodontal disease. It includes a third yearly visit and more access to our expert dental team.
  • 2nd Tier Periodontal Plan: If you know that you’ll need regular access to a dentist throughout the year, our 2nd tier periodontal plan can help you get the care you need at a reduced rate. This plan includes 4 scheduled preventative visits and the full discounts we offer on all restorative treatments.

The Benefits of Our Plans

We’re always looking for ways to give you a better deal, which is why our membership plan includes a host of advantages. There’s no waiting period for your dental care plan to kick in, no pre-authorizations, no credit checks, and no hidden fees. The plan doesn’t just remove barriers, it provides exclusive benefits. For Southington Dentistry members, there are additional savings on cosmetic dentistry and free teeth whitening sessions. Best of all, you’ll know your savings before the treatment and can focus the coverage to suit your needs.

Professional Flossing Advice in Southington

Flossing in Plantsville

Flossing is a key part of a great oral health regimen. Ideally, you should be brushing at least 2 or 3 times a day, preferably after meals and snacks, and you should also floss once a day.

But many Americans disregard flossing entirely. Only 40% of people floss at least once a day, and about 20% of people never floss. At Southington Dentistry, we believe this needs to change. Learn why you should start flossing today!

Why Is Flossing So Important?

Brushing your teeth is a great way to get rid of surface stains, plaque, and bacteria. It also removes the majority of food debris from your mouth. However, you can’t completely eliminate food debris and bacteria just by brushing. (Even with an electric toothbrush!)

This is because bacteria like to collect in the gaps, nooks, and crannies between our teeth. Toothbrushes simply cannot reach these areas, so if you don’t floss, you dramatically increase your risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

To eliminate food debris and bacteria, you must floss. Flossing lets you get into these hard-to-reach areas, and remove bacteria and food particles.

What’s The Proper Way To Floss?

The most commonly recommended method is the “spool” method. Break off about 18 inches of floss, and wind it around the middle fingers of both hands.

Then, begin flossing by moving the floss up and down in the gaps between your teeth. You should give each tooth several sweeps with the floss. After one tooth is cleaned, unspool a small amount of floss, moving it from one finger to the other to expose a clean, fresh segment of floss, and continue on to another tooth.

Make sure to clean below the gumline, as this is where bacteria tend to collect. Need more help? Check out this YouTube video for a step-by-step guide! If you need more help learning how to floss, we recommend asking your oral hygienist, or Dr. Neil Salesky of Southington Dentistry.

Can I Use A “Floss Pick” Instead Of Dental Floss?

In a word? No!

Floss picks use a single “strand” of floss, nestled between a plastic pick. Because they are easy to use, you may think that they are viable alternatives to traditional floss. But this is not the case.

The “spooling method” of flossing lets you remove bacteria, and then use a fresh piece of floss to clean the next tooth. But a floss pick uses the same piece of floss for every tooth. This means that you’re probably just going to redistribute oral bacteria between your teeth, rather than remove it entirely.

Can I Use A Waterpik Instead Of Flossing?

Again, no. Waterpiks and other “water flossers” use jets of water to clean between your teeth. While they are effective and safe, they are not as good at removing bacteria and food debris as regular flossing.

Using a water flosser is certainly better than using nothing at all. But it will be most effective if used alongside a standard flossing regimen.
